Jack custom fit this Heritage neck to fit my Selmer Reference 54 alto sax perfectly. The response is so much better throughout the entire range of the horn. Both of these horns are so much better than my yamaha that is is scary. They tune better than a VI, and the keywork is more comfortable too. These horns are fun to play, and the lacquer and engraving are really eye-catching. Is it really worth losing $2000-3000+ just to be the one to open the box the first time, versus having something nearly new with a proper setup? And any new one you buy will also need this same setup and will be worth around $4500 as soon as you drive it off the lot. This horn looks new but saves you thousands of dollars versus buying a new one. This horn is better than new because the factory pads have had a fresh setup including replacing several of them for increased playability and better feel and reliability down the road. These are the best sounding modern Selmers in my opinion, and actually do play similarly to a vintage Selmer, but with more modern ergonomics.

Then again it also doesn't have the instability, nor the tonal variability over the scale. The keywork of the Selmer Reference 54 saxophone utilizes a modern, ergonomic design. Much is made of the 54's nod to the past - specifically the MKVI (hence the 'Reference') - and while it's definitely got that typical Selmer depth, it doesn't quite have the petulance of the VI.

Have you tried many other models before acqurir? The Reference 54 alto takes its inspiration from a 1958 mid-70,000 serial number Mark VI. We must get used to the cltage beginners. What is the particular feature you like best and least?
